At the closing of this year’s legislative session, QLaw Foundation’s Rebekah Gardea and Denise Diskin sat down with members of their organization’s community advisory board to reflect on the recent legislative session and the importance of centering community leadership in advocacy efforts.

Despite several big successes, they left the session heartbroken that two of their most critical bills around healthcare and housing did not pass. A key takeaway from the session, however, was the power of centering the voices of those directly affected by the issues being addressed. Community members hold valuable expertise and insight into the challenges they face, and this lived experience is crucial for developing effective solutions. The success of the Strippers Are Workers Bill, underscores this point.

Watch the full conversation to hear their reflections on the session and their desire to learn from the successful grassroots organizing efforts and solidarity that rallied support for the Stripper Bill around other priority issues to our community.

Our keynote conversation from Falltacular 2020, ACLU attorney Chase Strangio and National Center for Lesbian Rights Executive Director Imani Rupert-Gordon talk about LGBTQ+ civil rights cases and movements, and how our communities are paving a path forward with love and guidance from our elders.

The Equality Act passed the US House in 2021 and now moves to the US Senate for consideration. QLaw Foundation, the GSBA, and the Washington State LGBTQ Commission joined forces to bring more clarity to what the Equality Act is, how the community can be involved in supporting it, and what impact it will have on LGBTQ Washingtonians.

This session is a panel discussion with community leaders focused on how to invest resources, time, and energy into movement building work with community, especially Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (QTBIPOC) communities. Panelists will address how legal system partners can best work with community members in a way that centers community needs and community-oriented justice. Panelists will speak from their lived experiences about the importance of movement building, identify where system partners need to plug in, and how to work towards dismantling the status quo.
